Social media platforms make sharing easy but downloading not always straightforward. Whether you're saving your own content for backup or collecting inspiration, each platform has its quirks.
Most platforms offer some official download options, but these often provide lower quality than the original upload. Understanding platform-specific tricks helps you get better results.
This guide covers the major platforms with methods for downloading both your own content and public content (respecting copyright, of course).
Table of contents
Official: Use 'Your Activity' > 'Download Your Information' to get all your posts.
Individual posts: Right-clicking doesn't work. Use browser developer tools (Network tab) or third-party apps.
Stories: Must be captured before they expire. Screen recording or dedicated story download tools work.
Quality note: Instagram compresses uploads significantly. Downloaded images max out around 1080px.
Twitter/X
Right-click works! But Twitter serves smaller versions by default.
For full quality: Add ':orig' to the end of the image URL (e.g., image.jpg:large becomes image.jpg:orig).
Or right-click > 'Open image in new tab,' then modify the URL parameters.
Twitter preserves reasonable quality—up to 4096×4096 pixels.
Right-click > 'Save image as' works on most Facebook images.
For albums: Click the image to open in viewer, then use Options > Download.
Your own data: Settings > 'Download Your Information' for bulk exports.
Quality varies by how the image was originally uploaded.
Pins show compressed versions. Click through to the source website for original quality.
If no source link exists, the pin image may be the only version available.
Use browser developer tools to find the highest resolution version Pinterest has.
TikTok
TikTok is video-focused, but profile pictures and thumbnails can be captured.
For video thumbnails, pause on the frame you want and screenshot.
Various online tools can extract TikTok video covers.

How to do it in 3 steps
Identify the platform and try native download options first.
If native options don't provide sufficient quality, try platform-specific tricks (like Twitter's ':orig').
Use browser developer tools for platforms that block right-click saving.
For bulk downloads of your own content, use platform data export features.
Organize downloads by platform and date for easier future reference.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✗Expecting social media downloads to match original camera quality—platforms compress significantly.
- ✗Using shady third-party apps that may compromise your account security.
- ✗Downloading without checking if lower-quality versions were served.
- ✗Ignoring that others' content is still copyrighted even when publicly visible.
