Instagram grid layouts have become a powerful way for brands, artists, and creators to make a visual impact. When someone visits your profile, a carefully planned grid creates an immediate wow effect that single posts can't match.
The technique involves splitting one large image into multiple smaller images that, when posted in sequence, reassemble as a complete picture on your profile grid. It's visually stunning but requires precise execution.
Our split tool takes the guesswork out of creating Instagram grids. Upload your image, choose your grid size, and get perfectly sized pieces ready to post.

Planning your Instagram grid
Decide on grid size: 3×3 (9 posts), 2×3 (6 posts), 1×3 (3 posts for a banner), or custom configurations.
Consider your posting schedule. A 3×3 grid means 9 consecutive posts—do you have the content buffer and the willingness to commit?
Plan for future posts. Once your grid is complete, any new post will shift everything. Some creators dedicate their entire profile to grid layouts.
Image requirements for grids
Instagram displays feed images at 1080×1080 pixels. For a 3×3 grid, your source needs to be 3240×3240 minimum.
Square ratio works best. If your source isn't square, crop it before splitting to avoid Instagram's auto-crop affecting your grid.
High contrast images with clear subjects work best. Subtle gradients or very busy images may not have the same impact when fragmented.
Posting sequence matters
Instagram shows newest posts first (top-left) and oldest last (bottom-right in a row).
To form the correct image, post pieces from bottom-right to top-left.
For a 3×3 grid, the posting order is: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (if numbered left-to-right, top-to-bottom).
Maintaining the grid over time
Any new post shifts the entire grid. Plan to post in multiples of 3 (for 3-column grids) to keep rows intact.
Some creators use archive and repost strategies to maintain grid integrity while staying active.
Consider using grid planning apps to preview how new posts will affect your layout.
